About Austin Greyhound Adoption

AGA's primary goal is to find responsible loving homes for pure-bred greyhounds after life on the racetrack and to acquaint the public with the desirability and availability of greyhounds as pets.

AGA is organized exclusively for charitable and educational purposes within the meaning of section 501(c)3 of the Internal Revenue Code. Our volunteers work very hard to bring you the best possible hound for adoption. Small dog and cat testing are done so that a better placement may be achieved. Our hounds are taken to AGA's veterinarian immediately upon arrival to be spayed/neutered, heart worm tested, teeth cleaned, vaccinations, nails trimmed & bathed.

Austin Greyhound Adoption is staffed entirely by volunteers dedicated to finding loving homes for retired racing greyhounds. Volunteers are always needed to introduce people to these gentle creatures, and also for many behind-the-scenes projects. If you have a skill that you'd be willing to share with us, please let us know.

Foster families help newly retired racing greyhounds adjust to life in a home. They introduce their foster dogs to things they may not have seen on the farm or at the track, like sliding glass doors, mirrors, stairs, tile floors, ceiling fans, and more. They get to know each dog's personality which helps us to find the best forever home possible.

Austin Greyhound Adoption pays all medical expenses for greyhounds in foster care, and all we ask of foster families is that they love their foster dog like one of their own, feed it, and talk to prospective adopters about their foster dog. Nobody knows the greyhounds in our program like their foster families!

The toughest but most joyous part of fostering is placing your foster dog into its new home. Although it can be sad to see them go, the sorrow is quickly overtaken with the joy of matching a greyhound with its new family.

The number of greyhounds we can bring into our program is limited only by the number of available foster homes. Please contact us if you would like to open your home and heart to a greyhound on their journey from the track to their forever family.

Austin Greyhound Adoption Celebrates National Adopt A Senior Month -
This year alone AGA has helped seven senior greyhounds. Five have found their forever families and two are waiting for their match to a loving family.
Congratulations to our 2016 Seniors: CTW Secret Life (aka Remy), Topaz Lady Luck, Peggy Do Run, BI's Fast Pace (aka Mariah), Atascocita Bowl, HK's Apoclypse, and KB's Hamlin.
Senior greyhounds teach us to honor age and dignity. They show us how the end of life can be just as interesting and rewarding as the beginning and that there is always something new to learn.
Most of the senior dogs available for adoption are brood mamas, however, we do get retired stud dogs too. Brood mamas have usually had a very successful racing career or have good bloodlines. Once their racing career ends, they are placed on farms to whelp puppies for the industry. When their puppy making days have ended they wait patiently for an adoption group to take them. Brood mamas and any senior greyhound for that matter require very little effort. They are often referred to as "the best kept secret in greyhound adoption."
Won't you consider adopting a senior greyhound this month? Austin Greyhound Adoption will waive the adoption fee for any senior adopted during Adopt A Senior Month.

How cool is it to have two available Greyhounds that are brother and sister? Meet Burton and Celeste!
Their wonderful foster has been arranging a home visit for Burton with a potential adopter. However, after visiting with the adopter for a while, they decided that Celeste might be 'lonesome' (not really, but who can resist a matched set??) without her brother - so, they are BOTH going on a home visit! AGA could not be more excited that this brother-sister duo could possibly wind up being adopted together!

Please help Loreal!
(Recovering from surgery)
UPDATE: The infection in Loreal's rear-left leg was just too great by the time she arrived at AGA and sadly she lost her leg, but will have a wonderful quality of life. The surgery was successful and she is happily recovering in her foster home. Please consider making a donation today and click on the PayPal button below to help us with sweet Loreal's medical costs!

Sweet Loreal came into AGA with a nasty rear-leg break. She is currently at our vet undergoing tests and treatment evaluation. Regardless of the outcome of her examination, she will have to spend time recovering in her foster home once surgical decisions have been made and resulting surgery performed. AGA wishes this sweet girl a healthy and speedy recovery!

Mariah - Permanent Foster - Sponsor Me!
Mariah has become a favorite Senior Gal within the AGA Family! As she has gotten older, though, she has developed a series of chronic benign skin cancers and small tumors that must be monitored and removed when necessary. AGA has made the decision to make Mariah a permanent foster family member and assure that she gets the attention and medical care that she needs for the rest of her life. Although she is not in any life-threatening danger, we just think she deserves extra TLC and
a "permanent" place to land with us!
Donations to Mariah's ongoing medical care can be made by visiting the AGA website at www.austingreyhounds.org and clicking the PayPal button!

FOSTERS ARE URGENTLY NEEDED!
Gulf Greyhound Park (GGP) in south Texas has closed. Many greyhounds have already been moved elsewhere or adopted. However, there are still greyhounds there that urgently need our help to find homes - foster or adoptive!!
Please contact Chris (austingreyhoundschris@gmail.com) or Chuck (aga-vp@austin.rr.com) or call (512) 895-9150 if you can open your home to one of these loving hounds and help them in their journey to retirement and life as a pet!

FOSTERS ARE URGENTLY NEEDED!
In addition to hounds currently in our adoption program that desperately need foster homes, we have also been asked by the adoption coordinator at Gulf Greyhound Park to accept more Greyhounds that are being retired from racing. Gulf Greyhound Park is now closed and these hounds have NO PLACE TO GO. Without AGA and groups like ours around Texas, the futures of these loving Greyhounds could be very grim. PLEASE CONTACT US TODAY IF YOU CAN OPEN UP YOUR HOME AND HEART TO ONE (OR MORE!) OF THESE WONDERFUL DOGS AS THEY TRANSITION THEIR LIVES TO RETIREMENT AS LOVING PETS!
AGA does not operate a kennel, but rather thru the generosity of loving fosters sharing their homes and love for hounds looking for their furever homes. For every foster willing to share their space with a Greyhound, we have another hound waiting to come into the program.
Fostering a Greyhound teaches them about life after the track, life in a cozy home, and prepares them for many years of love and companionship in their furever home. Every foster is helping to save a life and making room for the next hound coming into the adoption program. Fosters have ongoing support from AGA during the process. All you have to provide is food and love!

The Story - https://www.youcaring.com/austin-greyhound-adoption-466957
TMCs Lass Love (aka Dixie) is a sweet girl who suffered a broken leg the day she was going to start her racing career. She was anticipated to become a top racer just like her Dam and Sire were before her accident on the rearing farm. Upon breaking her leg, she was taken to see Dr. Moorehead at the Leander Vet Clinic in Leander, Texas. Her initial treatment was to wear a cast for six weeks. Upon removing the cast, the doctor had discovered that there had been joint damage, causing her left front foot to face slightly outwards. While Dixie could still walk in this condition, her distance was limited and she was in pain when trying to run. This was devastating since running is a huge part in a greyhounds life. Austin Greyhound Adoption decided that reconstructive surgery was Dixies best chance to have a high quality of life. Dixie was taken to Dr. Lewis at Veterinary Surgical Solutions in Austin, Texas for this surgery. Dixie is healing but still has a long road ahead of her. We hope that once she is completely healed she will be able to walk and run without pain.
Please help Austin Greyhound Adoption off set her expenses for her original casting and reconstructive surgery.

Mariah is a very sweet young lady that came to us via the Lockhart Animal shelter. She is soft, very friendly and loving. She would make an excellent addition to any home and is currently going through her AGA testing. She will be tested on cats yes or no, small dogs yes or no, and several other items to make sure she would be a good fit in your home.

Austin Greyhound Adoption has received word that a racetrack in South Texas will be closing at the end of the year! What does that mean?
There will be a large number of loving Greyhounds flooding into adoption adoption groups all over Texas...newly retired and looking for their furever homes! AGA will be working hard to vet-check and foster many newly adoptable Greyhounds! However, we can only host as many hounds as we can house!
AGA is in need of Loving Foster Homes for these retired racers. Please consider opening your home up to Foster one today. Please Contact Foster Coordinator Tim Kruger at austingreyhoundstim@gmail.com for more information.

November Is National Adopt A Senior Pet Month...
And that means that during the month of November AGA will waive the adoption fee for all seniors (8 years and older ). Our seniors will be available for adoption at the picnic to
pre-approved applicants only.
There are many more senior greyhounds looking for a home.
Could one be yours????
Take a look at who's available and ready for a forever home!
Chance...this beauty has been in foster care for close to 365 days. Even though she's cat napping here , don't let her 9 years fool you...she is full of love and life. If you have an empty spot at your house, can't you make Chances dream of a forever family come true. Don't let her 2nd Christmas go by in foster care. She will be at the picnic next Saturday.

AGA's 2nd Annual Family Picnic is coming up! Mark your calendar and plan to attend a great day of Family Fun and activities at DogBoys ranch in Pflugerville, Texas.

AGA is in need of Loving Foster Homes for retired racers. Please consider opening your home up to Foster one today. Please Contact Foster Coordinator Tim Kruger at austingreyhoundstim@gmail.com for more information.
